Recently ProGrad went to ‘Catch’ at Chatswood to interview two ProGrad employees - Cam and Angela. Cam and Angela came through the ProGrad process one year ago and were placed at Catch as Sales Executives. After six months both were promoted to sales managers and are now responsible for a team of five sales executives each. Their primary objective is to generate new clients wishing to purchase advertising space within the ferret and infolink departments.

Please read the interview below:

Dan - Catch has a very unique company structure. I noticed when looking at the website there is a staff profile of everyone. A few of the guys have long hair, there are quirky comments, and no one wears a suit! The website is bright orange too!

Cam
– Yeah, we have an awesome team of people. I think sales attracts a certain kind of person. Everyone is outgoing and fun and they are the kinds of people you’d be friends with outside of work. Every Friday we have beers together and normally go out afterwards. And yeah, I don’t have to wear a suit! Angela, what do you think?

Angela – I think there is definitely a sales culture. Everyone in the office is like-minded and that’s what makes it such a good place to work. From the M.D down to the sales executives, everybody is relaxed and helpful. If you are struggling to hit targets or whatever, there are always people around to help out.

Dan – What makes coming to work easier?

Cam – We work in teams so that everyone is working towards the same goal. If you are finding it tough there’s a whole team to help out. We don’t pick from the same database so we aren’t directly competing with each other. Teamwork is good in that way.

Dan - Did you both see yourselves going in to sales?

Angela – Hahaha no I was interested in media and marketing. I did a degree in events/marketing and wanted to pursue something similar. But after coming to the ProGrad assessment day I was impressed with the process and B2B sales sounded good. Once I had the interview at Catch I was sold! I loved the company structure. Everyone is young and loves to party and we have a pool table!

Cam – Yeah I was the same. I did a media degree with a journalism major and just went to the assessment day to get my mum off my back. Once I saw the daily pool competition and foosball, I was in!. Nah in all seriousness I liked that they were very upfront with me about the job. Catch makes it very worthwhile. The career opportunities were amazing and the commission structure is better than any other company I’ve seen. But it isn’t just about the money..

Dan – So what do you think B2B sales will prepare you for?

Cam – Anything! The experience you gain in sales will prepare you for any job you want. Just things like people skills, talking to clients and important people, and understanding how people think. Plus the progression into other areas is great too.

Dan – Ok, so can you guys run me through a typical day for the both of you?

Cam/Angela – It’s difficult to say because everyday the job is different. A few days ago Cam went out to a manufacturing plant to talk to a guy who knew nothing about advertising on the internet and he went through it all on the laptop and the guy was amazed! Other times you’ll go out to a big office in the CBD and make a presentation to the board members. It depends on what you want to do. If you don’t want to go on meetings you don’t have to. But a typical day would include:

8am Angela starts. Reads through emails and tasks to prepare for the day.

9am Cam toddles in. We normally play pool for about half an hour to unwind and get ready for the day ahead.

9.30-12 – We go through our leads, enquiries, maintain and further relationships with clients looking to advertise. Clients range from small companies to global companies. It really depends on your mood. We aren’t micro managed so as long as we get our tasks done we can work on whatever we want.

Lunch – Everyday we play foosball and pool. It can get pretty competitive and we bet on it as well. I try to win a free lunch or something like that.

The afternoon involves prospecting and following up leads. We work off our own database so it’s at your pace. You will probably attend a meeting at some point in the day as well.
