An Account Manager is responsible for generating new business from within existing accounts. This is still considered a business development role, and carries strategic responsibility.
What it involves
Most account managers work for private organizations, within a diverse range of industries.
Typical responsibilities include contacting existing client base, introducing yourself and organizing client visits; assessing and interpreting clients needs, preparing proposals and quotations, give demonstrations, attend trade exhibitions, conferences and meetings; providing training and support to sales colleagues, ensure that sales targets are met.
You will need to be a focused, proactive self-starter, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Additionally, you will act as an advisor and consultant, as well as a client advocate. You will use your analytical skills to grow existing business, and support your team with research, market analysis and other collateral. Above all, you'll be responsible for hitting your revenue targets.
The promotional prospects are excellent – these roles offer quick progression into senior positions or into related employment areas such as marketing or management.
What's required
Most degree subjects are acceptable for entry into the profession, although relevant qualifications are preferred for some positions, particularly within medical or technical sales.
Potential employees must have maturity, confidence, perseverance, patience, excellent interpersonal skills and should be commercially aware. IT, numerical and foreign language abilities can be useful.
