Business Development or Sales executives are employed by all types of companies, from manufacturers, service industries, retailers, industrial organisations and even some charities. Graduates with specialist knowledge are employed by pharmaceutical/healthcare organisations and the publishing industry. They are the key point of contact between an organisation and its clients: The role involves answering queries, offering advice and introducing new products.
This type of work includes: organising client visits; demonstrating/presenting products; establishing new business; maintaining accurate records; attending trade exhibitions, conferences and meetings; reviewing sales performance; negotiating contracts. The promotional prospects are excellent – these roles offer quick progression into senior positions or into related employment areas such as marketing or management.
What's required
Most degree subjects are acceptable for entry into the profession, although relevant qualifications are preferred for some positions, particularly within medical or technical sales.
Potential employees must have maturity, confidence, perseverance, patience, excellent interpersonal skills and should be commercially aware. IT, numerical and foreign language abilities can be useful.
