"ProGrad stay involved with the birthing of your career"

The odds are pretty good that you are minutes away from making one of the best decisions that you possibly could at this point in time.  You are most likely doing exactly what I was doing a few months ago, and searching the "world-wide-web" for that golden beam of light to shine down out of the sky and show you the perfect career now that your studies are over. Well while you're waiting for that, here's a hot tip. Send your resume through to ProGrad and you might not have to wait much longer.

To tell you the truth when I first received the phone call telling me that I had qualified for an assessment day, I had no idea what on earth that exactly meant.

Was it going to be a job interview? Was I going to have to plead my case for employment in front of a panel? What was I being assessed for? After a few phone calls with one of the ProGrad girls, I had a better idea what the objective of the day was. I was to spend a day being measured by my merits with about forty other people in the same boat as me. People who had just finished studying, feisty to get into the workforce. We were all out to prove why we should be given the opportunity to be placed in an industry leading company, before the other graduates standing on either side of us should.

I knew that on this day I had to stand out as someone who had the confidence and ability to sell myself as a Graduate, with the hope of being given the opportunity to represent one of ProGrad's industry leading client partners in a business to business sales role. The first thing you notice about the assessment day is the darting eyes of this room full of graduates. There are a mix of personalities in the room with some people looking more comfortable than others, and some staring at their boots. But that had to be expected because we all came from different paths of study, and different backgrounds. What happens next is that everybody in the room stands up and introduces themselves one by one, and looking back now you could almost have concluded the day from that point. The people who stood out the most during this simple task, seemed to be the people that excelled throughout the day and were finally the handful of Graduates chosen to go on as representatives of ProGrad's selection process.

The rest of the day consisted of some group tasks, a touch on psychometric testing, and of course a brief presentation to the ProGrad staff as to why you should be chosen for a career in business to business sales. The obvious answer to this question, was spelled out by your performance throughout the day. If you haven't shown the personality and confidence to stand out during the group exercises, then this is your last chance to show that you have what it takes to deliver a convincing argument, and to show that you have what it takes to represent a global organisation in a meeting situation. This is an opportunity for people to showcase their originality and personality, and it gives you a strong sense of self confidence when you have presented yourself convincingly. I was proud to have made it through the assessment day, especially after being surrounded by the high-calibre of other graduates in the room.

My assessment day was held on a Friday, and we were told that by the following week we would start going out to interviews. After a very lazy weekend, I did not expect to have several missed calls on my phone by the time I got out of bed on Monday morning. I was even more surprised upon returning these calls that I was to be sent to several interviews the very next day.

I have always had an interest in media. Media and Marketing were important parts of my studies in Entertainment Business, and advertising in particular was always an industry I had hoped to get into from a young age. I was very impressed when I was told that my interviews I would be attending were all for Media sales roles.

There are several things you think about before accepting a position within a company. Is there room for me to move and grow with the company? Is this company successful and profitable? Will I be pigeon-holed by the industry? Will I be genuinely proud of this position I have been offered? It is not often that you are sent to an interview and are absolutely blown away by the company you are being interviewed to represent. Blown away not just by the success of the company and the strength of it's name, but the quality of management who you are meeting during each stage of the process, and the future you can see for yourself within the ranks. I was proud to accept the position I was offered at JCDecaux as the newest member of the sales team. With presence in 48 countries globally, employing 7,900 staff members, with 725,000 advertising faces and turning over 1.7 bn Euros annually, JCDecaux are one of the world's leading out-of-home media providers. I am proud to be on board.

After recently passing the 3 month mark of my employment things are looking great, and I am learning everything I can from the team around me. I have complete freedom in my role, and I am helping to give birth to one of Australia's newest out-of-home media products. Unlike a standard recruitment company who will place you in a position, receive their commission, and then say goodbye and wish you luck, ProGrad stay involved with the birthing of your career. Since starting in my role, they have assisted in training me for the complications I come across on a daily basis. Handling sales objections and learning different sales techniques have helped me to deliver results thus far in my employment. Though still very early in my career and absorbing all that I can from the team around me, ProGrad's Module 1 and 2 training courses have given me a solid skill set to draw from on a day to day basis. I really do recommend that anyone out there who wants to use their own drive and attitude to start building a career, gets a resume out to ProGrad to get involved.
